3D technology: Nostalgic fad or innovative tool for healthcare communications?

On Saturday the Sun newspaper was printed in 3D, with free glasses. Last year Channel 4 had 3D week. And now World Cup matches will be showed in 3D in your local boozer. The trend is obviously pretty big, although it’s been around before (remember the eighties?) so is likely to dip in a year or two, if not sooner. However, that is not to say the technology isn’t effective if applied well. So here are a few ideas about how to utilise 3D technology in healthcare communications…

1. Mode of action: A 3D mode of action video could add that ‘wow’ factor to DVDs or live screenings at conferences/educational events for healthcare professionals. It could also be useful to help motivate a sales force.

2. 3D presenters: Another idea to give that ‘wow’ factor. Speakers at conferences could be filmed in 3D if they are not physically in the room. This could be to a big audience or pre-recorded and available in booths on a stand.

3. Holographic projections: Forget the glasses – 3D holograms can be played in a room. Richard Branson is a big fan…

4. Disease awareness communications: Why should healthcare professionals have all the fun? Health awareness campaigns could be livened up with 3D images. You could even team up with a magazine publisher to develop a 3D supplement or pull-out?

5. Viral videos: If you want to give your online viral video campaign a bit more oomph you could try producing a 3D version of your film. It’s not necessarily that difficult, as this man has shown with his 3D webcam (although you might want to make your film a bit more exciting than this one!)

That’s our starter for ten, but this list is by no means exhaustive so please comment with any other thoughts if you feel so inclined!
