A few years ago it seemed every other person on the street was plugged into Apple’s trademark white iPod headphones. Now it seems whenever a phone rings, the shiny black iPhone comes out. iPhone use has soared with over one million sold in the UK up to February 2009 and people are becoming more and more used to managing their lives through the practical software – or apps – it enables. Google Health is an obvious example – a piece of software designed (in theory) to optimise health by consolidating all your medical records in one place. One of the downsides of Google Health is that it’s only currently available on computers. But as ‘apps’ are proliferating and seeping into the mainstream, could we start to see the potential of mobile technology realised for the benefit of patients and healthcare professionals alike?
